Rethinking Education for a Future We Do Not Know

I wonder what kind of education would have served us best.

Not the education we actually got, nor the education politicians promise every few years, but the education that, looking back across the decades, might have helped us navigate the lives we have actually lived.

It is a question that interests me because most of us have now travelled far enough to know that very little happened as we planned.

The careers we imagined often disappeared or evolved into something else. Whole industries have come and gone. Technologies have transformed not only what we do but how we think about ourselves. Relationships have redirected our lives in ways no careers adviser could have foreseen. Some of us have found ourselves caring for ageing parents. Others have experienced redundancy, illness, divorce, unexpected opportunities or profound loss. Many of the moments that shaped us most deeply arrived entirely uninvited.

If someone had asked us at eighteen to prepare for the lives we would eventually live, where would we have begun?

The question matters because we seem once again to be reorganising education around predictions of the future. We hear that young people must be equipped for artificial intelligence, for the jobs of tomorrow, for an economy that scarcely exists yet. Before this it was digital literacy, employability, vocational excellence, entrepreneurial thinking. During my forty years in education and leadership development I have watched these waves crash one after another. Each has contained something valuable. Each has also assumed that we know rather more about the future than experience suggests we do.

Andy Burnham is right to argue that technical education deserves the same respect as academic education. Yet I think this debate is stuck in an outdated way of thinking. We continue to ask what knowledge or what skills young people will need, as though the future were waiting patiently for us to prepare them for it while our own lives tell a rather different story.

When I think about the people I most admire, or simply about friends who have found their way through lives that have not been easy, it is rarely their stock of knowledge that comes first to mind. It is something deeper. A capacity to keep learning when certainty has disappeared. The courage to change direction without feeling they have failed. An ability to ask good questions, to notice, to listen and to make connections between things that may seem unrelated. They recover after disappointment without becoming cynical and remain open to the possibility that life still has something to teach them.

None of these qualities belongs exclusively to academic education or technical education. Yet without them neither academic nor technical excellence seems sufficient.

Knowledge and technical competence matter. But knowledge accumulates more quickly than wisdom, and technical expertise becomes obsolete just as we become comfortable with it. The deeper challenge is not how much we know but who we are becoming as learners.

This is where I think education might turn its attention.

Instead of asking how we prepare children for a future we cannot know, we might ask what kind of learner can continue to flourish when the world refuses to remain still.

That question invites us to think less about delivering a curriculum and more about cultivating a disposition towards the world. Curiosity becomes a way of remaining alive to possibility. Reflection is a lifelong practice of making sense of experience. Judgement grows from learning to dwell with complexity long enough for insight to emerge. Agency comes from discovering that one can find one’s own way when no path is clearly marked.

I believe that many of us learned these things despite our education rather than because of it. We learned them through friendships, through failures, through work, through grief, through communities, through encounters with people unlike ourselves, through paying attention to the world as it unfolded around us. Life itself became our greatest teacher.

If this is how human beings actually learn to navigate lives that no curriculum could predict, surely these capacities deserve a more central place within education itself.

Imagine what primary education might become if wonder, attentiveness and friendship were treated not as pleasant additions to the curriculum but as foundations upon which everything else rests. Imagine secondary education in which young people are trusted to follow important questions across disciplinary boundaries rather than always being returned to the safety of predefined answers. Imagine universities concerned not only with producing graduates who possess expertise but with forming people who know the limits of their own expertise and the vital importance of humility.

Education hands one generation’s knowledge to the next. But now, helping young people become the kind of people who can meet an unknowable future with confidence, humility and imagination; who can remain faithful to learning itself even when the map no longer matches the territory sets educators a very different task.

When I look back over my own life, I realise that the education I value most was not the education that told me what to think. It was the education that slowly taught me how to keep learning, not only from teachers and textbooks, but from life’s rich tapestry.

I cannot help wondering whether that is also the education we owe our children. I’m pretty sure it’s not the education that employers and our educational infrastructure will advise Mr Burnham to develop.
